Expensive junk I bought this recorder about 2 years ago when I switched to digital format. The recorder is used for my business but not abused. It was always carried in a case and inside my hard shell briefcase. About 3 months ago the HOLD switch stopped working but I continued using the recorder by removing and replacing the battery so it would not run down. Oh it would automatically turn off and then mysteriously turn itself back on until the battery was dead. Today I took a recorded statement and although it was on the recorder it played backit would not download to my CPU. Sadly I bought THIS recorder because I've had such good experiences with Olympus cameras in the past. PS my coworker bought another model of this same recorder shortly after I bought mine and it is starting to do similar goofy anoying stuff. Pathetic quality..
Very Good Voice Recorder This is a very good little voice recorder and mp3 player. It's tiny lightweight size is very easy to carry in your pocket especially when you are on the go and it is very easy to operate. Also the sound quality is very good. The only problem is that it drains the battery very quickly. However If you don't mind keeping plenty of batteries handy this recorder will fullfill your basic recording and listening requirements.
Very bad product avoid at all costs Before considering to purchase this recorder please do a search for the model number on google OLYMPUS WS300M. You will find that many many people have memory error malfunctions the moment they change the battery for the first time. From this point on the product no longer works ever. The manual says that this error message indicates that the unit needs to be returned to OLYMPUS as it is an internal memory error. It is very light and compact but the battery disconnects from the main unit when you use the USB port meaning that you may need to reset the date and time.Maybe you can return it when it malfunctions but you know what a hassle it is to deal with returning anything purchased on the internet. This product is not worth the hassle. Mine worked for abou 20 minutes and never again. I spent USD80 and it was money out the window. I am sure Panasonic or Sony make less nice looking but more reliable products.
great but not longlasting This is a phenomenal speech and song for rough sketches recorder w/o all the ambient and handmovement noise problems etc. that so many have. However it did not take all that long to start going on the fritz I think I came close to losing 3 full folders of sketches! and also to suddenly start sucking batteries dry in under an 1/2 1 hour's usage having always given me amazing battery life before. At this expense I would expect 46 years of life not 1 or so. I'm having trouble finding a different and more durable one that lives up to it's high standards and will work with Vista this is fine with Vista I guess since it's simple ironically a lot of newer ones are not. Most of the good ones seem to be geared toward usage with a tripod which defeats my peripatetic purposes. You won't be able to cut in halfway through a track for editing or any of that fancy stuff. My other beef is that it should have more storage space. I had hoped to keep a couple of MP3 albums on it too but I need all the space for recording.
Great features solid design This unit plugs right into a Mac or PC with no additional software and doesn't require you to carry cables or adapters. That's about as easy as a mobile person can get. When helping people to choose a suitable digital audio recorder I always point them to devices that have builtin USB plugs like this one does. In my mind it's silly to require a dock and a 6foot cable when plugging the device in like a thumb drive is such an obvious advantage. Of course if you WANT to plug it into a 6foot USB extension cordThe only thing I didn't like is that the default audio format is WMA which you can convert on your computer to something else later. I would have preferred MP3 or WAV though WAV files can be a bit large. My unit has been borrowed dozens of times everyone loves it.
Good but not over time There's a lot to be said about this product. I found that the recording quality was very good. Yes it is sensitive to handling noises but once you are aware of that you can be careful. However first negative it chews up batteries like candy. Now that I have had it for about 2 1/2 years it can go through a battery in a day easy. And lately it has stopped working consistently. Something has gone wrong with this once wonderful little machine and it is now very unreliable. So you may need to keep that in your head It will work for about 2.5 years. An additional plus is that it can function as an MP3 player although I didn't use it for that purpose very often. It was a business tooland that has to be reliable.
Great little device I'm a student and I initially bought this voice recorder to record lectures of which it has worked perfectly. I'm also a musician and it works great in rehearsals. The quality is really really good for being exposed to live loud music. I've had my recorder for over 6 years and would def purchase it again. Only one time did it act funny. I had plugged the USB into the computer and deleted my files from there only because it was faster. However something strange happened. I had no files which was fine because that is what I deleted however I had no memory as well. I had to plug it back in and add all of my files back into the device and manually delete them from the recorder. Since that happened I've never deleted my files from plugging it into the usb. I only download my files to my computer and then I delete the files manually from the device itself.
Finicky I bought one of these last year and loved it for the first several months. The sound quality was great. It was easy to put recordings on my computer and it was Mac compatible. But every time I've used it in the last two months it's shut off a few minutes into an interview. I've replaced the battery cleared the contents everything. But the problem keeps happening so I'll have to replace it with another model.
Olympus digital recorder This is a great little product. However I needed it to record singing and therefore wanted it to hang around my neck. The neckpiece didn't come with it which I thought it would. Now I can't find one anywhere. There is a miniscule opening for one but it has to be very thin and I can't find one anywhere. I feel the company should include one with every recorder.
Haven't used it much. Good quality and easy to use. Really haven't used it much but it has worked well when I did.
