Sony ICDSX7 Stick recorder It will be some time before I am able to use it to its fullest. The Book leaves much to be desired but got the larger off the internet. Sound pickup and quailty is great. I am well pleased.
I'll never buy Sony again Never worked w/ Dragon. I contacted them and they were working on it.i don't use it much and just tried to turn it on tonight. DEAD. Called $29 for labor since it is warranty last day. Otherwise it would be $89.And they were not working on Dragon compatibility it is compatible you just have to run another program put the file on your PC and have Dragon read that.Going thru this I turned on my years & years old Olympus. Not nearly the features and no PC connection but it does still work.
A unique Recorder This product is compact and easy to switch from playing my music to voice recording.
Very Disappointed Lasted about 23 months! Purchased February 2010. Used about a dozen times. Never mistreated. It now shorts batteries and doesn't work at all. Sony will exchange it for $80.00. This is not good product support policy.
Sony Recorder This is a great improvement over the previous Sony digital recorder I purchased. The buttons are smaller so if you have larger hands or fingers you might have to take it slowly when operating. Allinall a good buy.
Miserable for dictation Since none of the reviews I read here really deal indepth with dictation I thought this review might be useful to save someone else the return postage on this recorder. It's too late for me.I bought this recorder for dictation after doing lots of research including reviewing the owner's manual to confirm that it had the functions that I needed. This is a fine recorder if you are just recording and then playing back. If on the other hand you buy it to use for dictation it is a miserable waste of plastic. It has overwrite and review functions that should work for dictation. However the number of steps to cue it up to the place you want to start overwriting and recording make it a real pain compared to a simple microcassette recorder. Also if you do not stop before the end of the file instead of appending the new recording to the old one it creates a new file. At the end of your dictation session you could easily wind up with your dictation spread across five files when you thought you were working out of one. That means a lot more work for the transcriptionist. This machine also requires a four pedal setup for the transcriptionist which for most of us means buying a new pedal for our transcriptionist in addition to the recorder. At the end of the day even though Sony promotes this for dictation it just is not close to their microcassette recorders or some other digital voice recorders.UPDATE If you want a digital voice recorder for dictation try the Olympus DS2400. I bought it after this Sony and it was night and day. The Olympus is perfectly intuitive and it does all the things that the Sony should do but doesn't.
Good Stuff Great Product . i dunno much about this product i bought it for my wife. She loves it. I hear that it is crystal clear and is one of the best that you can order says like consumer reports..or Google searches you can add voice recognition software and have it play and type the words out. But the price was great and its a little early to tell but it is serving it's purpose.
Great sound from lhis little recorder I bought this mainly to do evps with. It is very sensitive mic but without distortion and machine noise that some have. Conforms to your hand well. It takes a little figuring out to use. I picked every sound including some people several yards away clearly.
Worst product I ever bought on line A Kid's Review I know Im not stupid.have a graduate degree.but this has got to be the worst product Amazon sells. The directions are poorly writtenthe quality of the recording is terrible. I have not been able to use it and would return it if I had the original packaging. Great evidence tool in law enforcement. I researched and compared Olympus recorders and this Sony recorder. A friend of mine uses a similar Olympus and likes it. I use this Sony recorder in the slim case it came with. The recorder fits in my uniform shirt and records while I am on a call. The recorder serves as a great evidence tool as a patrol officer. The batteries last for a long time.

Great recodrer The Sony ICDMX20 is a great tool for professionals who must record review and be able to slow and speed up the playback. Makes it great for writing up interviews and for transcriptionists to control speeds for a hard copy. On screen control and document access at same time makes for quicker and quality work.
Excellent Sound Awful Software I have had this recorder for four years now. I have had the opportunity to use it frequently lately due to my interviewbased research. Based on my experiencePROS* Sleek design* Lightweight* EXCELLENT sound recording* Good display screen* Great memory capacity* Easy navigationCONS* AWFUL I repeat AWFUL battery life I keep the hold button on when not in use yet a set of two new AAA batteries are completely drained after less than eight hours so about three interviews.* Proprietary file format* Conversion to WAV file is only possible if the converted file is less than 2GB no option for compressed file. You have to split the original file in several portions so that it does not exceed this size.
Nice recorder I bought this recorder to use with Dragon. It works well. It was easy to set up. I bought it used and it arrived in good condition in the original box with all the software and documentation.
Controls are very poorly designed. Don't buy this the Navigation/control button in the center is extremely fragile and the device will be useless. The button operates like a joystick but also most of the functions of the device have to be manipulated through this tiny button. It is cumbersome to operate and not well made. I am very gentle with electronics been building my own pc's for over 20 years but I bought it online without test driving it. That button in the middle is going to break with mediocre usage and you'll end up like me a very disappointed customer. Trying to get it replaced is a nightmare and as a result I will never purchase anything from sony ever again. As of now it is sitting in my closet useless and sony refused to replace it with a new one. I will never accept a refurbished product as a replacement for a brand new defective item period. Sony refused to give me a new one. Go with another product.
DON'T BUY THIS I used this only one time before its little brain became unstable and I lost recordings. Then in trying to trouble shoot I discovered commands were disappearing from the menu. I spent hours trying to get to the bottom and went through tech support which did not give me any advice that I had not tried through the package insert. Sony wanted $89 to exchange or repair. Way too expensive for a single use item and a huge waste of time. Shop for a different recorder.
Won't Sync with Naturally Speaking if You Have Vista The recorder itself is excellent. Just be aware though that a compatibility problem with Vista will prevent you from training a user profile for the recorder in Naturally Speaking 10[]There is a workaround for now. Hopefully the problem will be resolved fully before long maybe just in time for a new round of problems under Windows 7.
Great product. Software works under Linux/Wine I've used this for a couple weeks now and I love it. The unit has a robust feature set and is very versatile. I'll give bullet points. The removable storage was a big draw for me. At ten bucks for a 1Gb card I can use the cards themselves for archiving. The ability to create folders was important to me. It has a robust feature set. It has fantastic sound quality. Great voice pickup I have a soft voice and I normally have problems with pickup but this unit has no problem with it. The included software will convert the proprietary format to WAV files and then you can convert to mp3 or whatever you want with thirdparty software e.g. Audacity. I didn't get the Dragon Naturally Speaking software so I cannot comment on that. I'll try that later. Some people commented on the incredibly smooth finish being almost slippery. I can see that but I don't have a problem with it. The unit is small so if you have large fingers it might take a little getting used to but the buttons and the joystick quickly became comfortable to use. Some criticized the pouch that comes with the unit. It's a little pouch no flap or buttons or anything made from polarfleece type cloth. Good for keeping it from being scratched but I'm already looking for something to replace the pouch. The included software will work on Linux if you install it using WINE.
Great recorder I use this with Dragon Naturally Speaking as it got high marks with their testing. It is very light and compact and works well. Mine was stolen after a year's use and I decided to upgrade but after a lot of research I ultimately just bought another ICDMX20 as it really met all my needs without any drama.
Worthless! All I wanted was a recorder that I could use for dictation/transcription with my copy of Dragon NaturallySpeaking + MP3 player functionality as a secondary use. What a waste of time! With the hoops I have to jump through to fiddle with the folders start the dreadful Sony Digital Voice Editor software manually it doesn't even autostart copy the proprietary MSV file convert it to a nasty WAV that's the only option and manually transfer it to NaturallySpeaking because the voice recognition initiation functions are not available because I didn't buy it as bundle perhaps?.Here's a list of my issues after wasting a few hours with it1. the giant pieces of printed paper that Sony passes off as manuals are unintelligible.2. folders can only be created one level deep and the names you give them are replaced with FOLDER<nn> when you view the memory stick from Windoze Explorer making them far too cryptic to find anything.3. It's an unnecessarily timeconsuming process to copy a voice file for transcription as I described above.4. Sony's online eSupport is worse than the manual it responds to even the simplest questions with There are no results try rewording your search. WORTHLESS!5. I was led to believe it would play MP3 files IT DOESN'T! When you copy an MP3 file using Windoze Explorer into a folder with a meaningless name the device doesn't recognize it and simply says no voice files. So guess what you have to convert your hifidelity MP3 into a sucky proprietary VOICE file using the agonizingly slow Digital Voice Editor POINTLESS!As for making document preparation easier through offline recording and transcription I think Moses had a more efficient method with stone tablets and a chisel. Don't get me wrong the Dragon NaturallySpeaking transcription software works like a charm when you are tethered to the PC i.e. without the useless recorderI picked this device because other reviewers liked it it seemed to be the right balance of voice recorder falsely claiming compatibility with NaturallySpeaking and music player that's a joke and because it is one of the few recorders with a removable memory card. I can't yet comment on the sound quality but the removable card is pointless if the only thing I put on it is MSV files.So far like NOTHING about this device but I'll give it another try tomorrow and report back if I find any redeeming features don't hold your breath.
Works well with digital transciption I purchased this recorder specifically for working with Dragon 11 Voice Recognition software. I use it as a home inspector to record notes in the field for transcription back at the office opposed to writing and then typing them up. I have been using it for about three weeks now and it works like a champ. I am very pleased with the results particuarly after reading some of the negative reviews.

I am very pleased with this little recorder. Before buying this recorder I purchased the Olympus DS2. It worked quite well but then I found the fatal flaw at least for me you can't use it for dictation because there is no easy way to search back and forth through something you've recorded to insert overwrite or add on to a previous recording. So I sold that puppy and then really wrestled with purchasing this recorder or the Olympus DS2300 which costs twice as much.
Good recorder if you get it to work with your PC. This recorder is a sleek little device and has good features that I won't bother repeating here.What is *very annoying* is the Digital Voice Editor software and the USB connectivity. I've reinstalled the software numerous times without getting it to work. The recorder shows PC Link the DVE software shows my recordings but as 0.00.00 length! Clicking on a recording just gives an error.Sony has a Windows Media Player plugin but WMP fails to recognize the recorder.Dragon Naturally Pro 9 fails to recognize the recorder too. This same model is sold with this software as ICDSX46VTPUSB connections under Device Manager shows the recorder but it doesn't show up anywhere else??Sony support for this model is nonexistent. Not even drivers in its support section.After my frustrations with this recorder and googling for answers I've read that pretty much all the Sony Digital Recorders use the crappy DVE software. I would recommend that everyone stay away from Sony recorders just because of this DVE software.

Love the recorder hate the software I love this recorder and never leave home without it use it for interviews excellent sound quality and to listen to podcasts and so far it's been very reliable. The only big problem is the software Digital Voice Editor 2. It's crappy buggy crashes all the time. It refuses to import certain types of podcasts MP3 of 44 Mhz or more if I remember well. The fact that Sony doesn't provide patches and updates for this awful software is pretty infuriating.
Still No Vista Drivers It works but just no excuse for not having Vista drivers out. It's 8 months since Vista came out and the only drivers out there are in Japanese. For the last 7 months I called their tech support and got nowhere then finally found info on their web site.
Useless with Win 7 According to Sony support this device is not compatible with Win 7. Instead of using it as a digital voice recorder you have to download the data via the ANALOG headset jack into your computer MIC in. None of the digital functionality can be accessed via software from Win 7. There are NO drivers to support this device on Win 7.The Sony support response Please note that the USB connectivity of the IC recorder is not compatible with the Windows 7 Operating System.
Decent devise terrible software. I have had this for a year now. The unit itself is pretty high quality. Many options. The problem is the software. The digital voice editor software that comes with it is very limited and never was great. But what's worst of all is you need to keep the disk with you and not lose it because if the software has a glitch like mine just did and you are on the road and you don't have the disk you cannot hope to find the software to redownload to reinstall. Sony only posts updates to it as if the software itself here was some valuable product to protect. It's a little proprietary player that also happens to be the ONLY way you can transfer the files to your computer. So if it stops working and you don't have disk you are screwed. This is unacceptable in this day and age. It's not like ANYONE in the world would want to download and use this software for anything other than if you were using one of these units. It's essentially barely more than the driver you need to transfer and you need it to convert the files. Typical proprietary Sony overprotecting things to the hurt of the customers who want just to use their product. This is how Beta lost to VHS in so many ways.I would NOT buy this unit again for this reason.
Sony ICDSX46 128MB Digital Voice Recorder So far so good. I haven't used to the maximum extent. I still have to explore all the features and the audio capabilities in a large crowd.
The SX46 is an excellent recorder I've owned this recorder for over a year. I find it an excellent product. The software is not difficult to figure out. It automatically files the subject under time and date. You convert it to a sterio or mono MP3 file by choosing the correct save as category to a file on your hard drive. I am currently buying a second one for other family members.
A little & nicelooking device This digital recorder is very convenient for me to bring it all day and with easy operation. I really like this a lot and now I suggest you to buy onethen you'll find out that the recorder is very useful.

Good little recorder over all Very easy to use and long battery life though the sound quality is pretty lame when recording in a teaching environment but gets the job done.

Not Compatible With 64bit WIN 7 I've been using my ICDP320 for over 6 years on Win XP & Vista 32bit computers with free Sony software. Great also for recording conference calls etc. with a 3rd party direct hookup to the phone. Great for recording meetings where you have to write minutes later on. I would download all the foregoing to my computer to burn CDs edit etc. Make sure you have fresh batteries in the recorder before starting a long recording session.But recently I had to replace one of my laptops and the new one has 64 bit Windows 7. When I loaded the Sony program for the ICDP320 it wouldn't recognize the recorder.
Excellent transaction Having owned this model previously I was looking for a replacemnt for my lost recorder. Within an hour of my purchase I found my first recorder. It is the easiest recorder I have ever used and the lock feature keeps me from accidentally recording over any previous work not to mention the method by which it files. I have confidence in Sony products and buying the same model keeps all my transcribing software and equipment operational. The digital sound quality is excellent. Once while conducting an interview with someone the distance between the recorder and the person speaking was substantial but you would not have known as the recording sounded as if the person was mikedup.The second recorder in case you're wondering is being used by my office staff.
Helped in my Divorce This is a totally different kind of review but I think it's necessary. I bought it to protect my conversation/me against BS accusations in a divorce.It was so SWEEEET to have myself vindicated each time I was accused of being ugly during a conversation on the phone or in person. I LOVED the fact that the internal Mic faces towards the top. I could wear it in a shirt pocket and it caught the conversation from across the table still.For this pure reason alone it was worth every cent I paid. It was nice to have technology on my side for something like this and to see the face of my ex when the recording was played.
Another Sony let down If you have windows vista don't bother with this device. It will not operate. Once again Sony has given me yet another reason to stop buying Sony.To get the information off the device you are required to have windows xp. They will not update a driver to accomodate a vista computer connection. All because they have their own format on this thing.
Vista Users! DO NOT BUY THIS MODEL This recorder is a neat little package and so much so that I purchased additional units in the event my original broke down I use it for work. I still think that for the money it is one of the better models that Sony made yes past tense. Unfortunately since they no longer make them neither do they provide very good support for this model which you can discover simply by doing a search using such text as my ICDP320 won't work with Windows Vista. Sony does provide a driver that is supposedly an update which serves to facilitate compatibility with Vista but you will find if you did that search that the driver doesn't work and provides no more than lip service which in this case could be an acronym for Sony tech support in regard to this product. Eventually working my way up to a senior tech within Sony's product support system he confided to me that until the creator's of Windows Vista yes them reach some sort of an agreement with Sony no working driver including the one that they say is a working driver to enable Vista users to continue to enjoy their ICDP320 will be forthcoming. So that leaves me with several wasted 82 MB redownloads on more than one occasion thinking I would soon have the magic driver but didn't get it tech conversation time wasted as well as occasional sparks of hope that maybe they had resolved the driver issue and had not and yet another attempt at downloading that magical driver that will work just as they say it will.You can buy an updated version of this sweet little recorder with odd looking little barrel microphones attached at the top for about three hundred bucks or buy the UX versions which have little if any actual volume advantage and in fact require a set of headphones if you want to play back whatever you record and actually be able to hear it but still as those of us who really like this recorder the ICDP320 and think that Sony should support their product but don't it's such a nice recorder that I still dream that someday they will come up with a working driver. Planned obsolescence? I'm not sure but I know that for those of us who have this useless recorder paired with Vista life doesn't get any better nor does it promise to anytime soon.
Let Down by this recorder I boought this recorder to record sermons for my church email outreach ministry. The first 7 times I used it the file transfer went smoothly the sound quality could use some work but I was still able to use it. As soon as I got comfortable enough to quit taking notes I had major trouble with the fle transfer not working. I tried all the help suggestions but it still does'nt communicate. I'll still trying to use it. But my advice is to keep taking notes just in case. I'm shopping for another recorder.
