Do Not Buy, Very nice to record and copy to your PC hard drive, but it is impossible to copy to a CD. What's the point? We recorded our infant son and then tried to make a CD copy, Impossible.
If you want to keep a copy for yourself or to give to someone it is impossible, worthless piece of equipment. Do Not Buy, find another brand.
So-so product, I bought this for taking notes in the field which I would later edit, so that connecting to a computer was not an issue and neither was fidelity. After learning to use it I took it on an 8 day trip in the woods; when I got back, I could not retrieve my data. I sent it to Olympus and they said they could fix it for $40 and I would probably get my data back. The data was worth it, so I gave them the go ahead. When I got it back, it was fixed but my data was lost. Evidently this happened because I did not replace the battery as soon as the "battery low" sign appeared. This seems to me to be a pretty serious design flaw.
The big brother to the fantastically durable VN-480PC, I have had this recorder's nearly identical little brother, the VN-480PC for well over five years of very heavy use now, and I wanted to move up to this, the largest capacity version of Olympus recorders with the exact same feature set.
While the VN-480PC has just short of three hours total record time at the highest resolution "HQ" setting, this has just short of twelve hours total at its highest resolution "XHQ" setting.
I wanted the extra capacity, plus the possibility of slightly better sound quality over that of the already excellent VN-480PC.
There are a few other minor features of this recorder, such as two variations in playback speed, but I will detail only the features I use often.
1) Five way controller that even a first time user can understand for fast forward, rewind, playback, and volume adjust.
2) Five separate buttons for other purposes, including folder selection/index, display/menu, record, stop, and delete.
3) Two settings - HI and LOW - for recording level settings - I use LOW for recording up close and HI for large rooms or even arenas.
Not Computer Friendly, DO NOT buy this if you ever intend to move files to your computer. I switched to a Mac and it doesn't work with my computer. I tried it on 2 PC's and it doesn't recognize it. It does not come with software.
pretty good, i
I really liked this product and it was good for the price. except it didnt have a usb cable so i bought another one, and the other one came with a wave sysstem, which is a must have for a ghost hunter like myself.
Good little recorder!, This is a good digital recorder that has the capability of being connected to a computer and the voice files uploaded in order to save or transcribe. Our clinic uses these for 13 of our doctors and the Transcription Department loves the ease of processing the voice files into transcribed documents.
great recorder and seller, the seller was very nice! I had asked them to send me a picture and they did, and once I had paid for the item, they shipped it out to me the same day and also sent me an email telling me they had done so.
Great recorder, I used this quite extensively for making recordings as evidence as well as for taking notes. It's a great little recorder, good microphone but a bit "tinny" even on the highest quality setting. Best feature is that it is easy to download recordings. Battery life is nothing special but it is quite good. I ended up with a newer model with more memory for my needs. My son has been using this for a few years now for taking notes in school.
Won't mount for simple transfer on it's own, Olympus website lack of software and driver support for this device has been a tremendous detriment to our office's professional work today. Audio files were needed from the VN-4100PC this morning and (after the annoyance it would not interface with Mac) this task proved impossible without the employee's software disk which is at their home. In my professional opinion no software should even be necessary for a simple device mount and straight drag and drop transfer of audio files, and if software is 100 percent required then it should be readily available for download on the website, not given an indirect link to the store to request a CD-ROM to be snail mailed.
A generic digital voice recorder driver should work with this device, but Windows could find no suitable option through the local and online search.
I haven't seen simple hardware like this that requires its own software "or else" with no online download in a decade.
Get with it Olympus. Terrible product design and terrible online support. To top it all off, tried to file a complaint on their website about not having a driver or software available and the contact us form for the website gave me an error after trying to submit a message.
Great little recorder, I have been very pleased with this little voice recorder. I've used it for oral history. Also, for doctor visits. The sound is clear. It is easy to transfer files to the computer for storage or processing or listening.
I bought a second one of these for my mother to use.
