I do like it I needed one and I'm very good with tech stuff so working it was slight easy for me. i did have to read the tiny instruction to get more detail out of the device but gosh they could have wrote them in a bigger font. I know I'm not using all the features and I have not used it for the reason I bought it yet but just recording stuff at random is good. Glad I bought it and will update more later.
Very disappointed I purchased this through Amazon.I am very disappointed the sound is full of static. The manual is written very poorly and is hard to understand. I had to download it from their web site. I spent an hour looking through it and still don't know all the basics much less the fine points.Someone recommended this product for recording music but music sounds terrible. I wish I had purchased the Sony product instead. No I would not recommend this to friends.
Good overall product. I've been using this for a few months now and feel quite comfortable with it. First of all it's been reliable and consistent 2 of my biggies and the voice is sharp and clear. I haven't used it to play music or audiobooks yet so I can' review that At the moment I use it primarily for recording tasks taking notes and for fictionwriting. Here are some specific positives1. They did a great job in preventing accidental erasure of filesyou really can't erase a recording unless you really intend to.2. I love flexibility and this unit is very flexible in recording and playback options even allowing you to save your favorite configurations.3. I like the brushed feel of the case nice comfortable feeling.4. I was immediately impressed with the default carrying case that came with the unit. It wasn't just a simple cheaplyproduced slipcase that they tossed in to pad the also included list it was custom cut specifically for this unit and of a decent quality. Obviously someone actually pays attention to customer impressions. The only negatives would be that the screen is a bit busy and you can't make it display the current time by default. But these are mostly minor things. I dislike not being able to transfer recordings from one folder to another without using the software but that's probably a preference rather than a negative. Otherwise the software itself is pretty good.Overall I'm quite satisfied. If you're a regular joe or jane then it's probably more than enough.
Early report only This report is early the DVR was purchased fairly recently.I have found the DVR wonderful for picking up small meetings a dozen persons all within 4 yards from the DVR. Its stereo pickup separation left from right is amazing! Its software Sonority use for playback under MS Windows is superb.New product needed A pair of travel speakers i.e. light & compact with amplifier powered by say two AA NiH rechargable batteries and WITH both volume and tone control. Searched for that with Google so far none found.Purpose playback during a meeting of say up to 50 people in a small hall.If music playback MP3 files is of decent musical quality that would be an extra.Price Hopefully not over $50.
Great for eAudiobook readers This is a compact digital voice recorder and mp3/WMA player. I bought it expressly for eAudiobooks which are available for download through our local library. The included printed instructions do not address this feature at all you must go online and find instructions in a 128 page manual. But once found and read the device proves pretty easy to use. The most difficult thing is to learn how hard to push a button and how long to hold it. Variance in these actions creates different results. I used Windows Media Player to download books instead of adding another program which was enclosed to my computer. The device will begin at the point stopped unless you are listening to several books alternately. If that is the case it is easy to place a bookmark they call it a temp mark where you want to pick up listening again. The case can be carried on your belt and its only problem is that the magnetic closure opens too easily.
Some microSD cards won't work with DM420 Olympus tech spent over an hour having me reformat my 8GB class 2 microSDHD card which wouldn't work in DM420. Kept saying Please wait. Tech said to return DM420 card reader must be defective. Card worked fine in laptop. Bought second DM420. 8GB microSDHC card STILL wouldn't work. Bought 4GB microSD class 4 card. FINALLY worked in DM420. So DM420 may not work with 8GB cards or not with class 2 cards or not with SDHC cards and may not work with your card.Sonority software is confusing and buggy.
impossible to Use don't buy it Olympus DM520send my refund today this is definitley an inferior productit won't work. period.
Only good when it works It can not be charged after several months of use. It was stuck at the initiation page showing OLYMPUS icon and froze. Frustration. Be aware and not to buy.
Great voice recorder Have been using this mostly as a voice recorder for language learning for over a year. It records the nuances of the tones very well. I am not very technical but have found it to be very easy to use and pretty durable. Didn't care too much for the earbuds that came with it but that was easily remedied. Would definitely recommend this recorder for other language learners. It ate the rechargeable batteries that came with it pretty quickly but have been able to get long usage from other rechargeable AAA batteries.
superior recording quality great for lectures meetings dictation love this recorder!!!I recently transferred from a laid back community college to a highpaced Ivy League University and my notetaking skills were not up to par. This recorder is a life saver!! The microphone is so sensitive you can sit 5 rows back and still hear the professor clearly. Even sitting further back results in an acceptable recording. This is important because sometimes you don't want to or can not sit in the first row. Also some professors don't like it when you record them so putting your recorder visibly right on their desk is better avoided. The play back is o.k. but it clearly is designed to record so you need to use headphones with this device. With headphones the play back quality is truly amazing. This device has the largest memory capacity on the market and it has the ability for external memory. I bought an additional 8GB microsd card with it. Now I can record up to almost a thousand hours more than enough for an full academic quarter with 4 classes without having to erase anything. The recorder helps me to take more detailed notes or simply to listen to the lectures in order to study for exams. Now I can just lean back and relax in class and actually listen to the professor rather than typing like crazy in order to keep up. The recorder comes with software but I have not used it yet I use the play back mode on the device. The recorder is easy to use and you can save your lectures in 5 different folders and the files are timed and dated. There are a few downsides this device does eat two AAA batteries regularly and when you want to play back the recording on the device you only have the option to push play or stop. For some weird reason there is no fast forward or rewind option on the device. I assume you would have more play back options if you take the trouble to download the software and the recordings to your pc. This Olympus recorder is pricey but totally worth it. This is a must have for stressedout transfer students it will make your life so much easier.
