Don't buy this for dictation! DS2400 recorder uses the new and improved DS2 format which in not compatible with the transcription service and is proprietary. You can dictate all you want but when it comes to digitally uploading and transcribing you'll be out of luck. I'll be returning mine or donating it somewhere.
Awesome Product Awesome product. Very fast shipping and packed well. Looking forward to doing business again.
Good for dictations I purchased 2 of these to replace our aging DS2300. I learned We use them for medical dictation and they are heavily used. It has been a good replacement so far. For starters it has a common USB cable that is cheap to replace as opposed to the oneofakind very pricy one that the 2300 had > $50 if you can find a used one. The recorder is overall better built with a sturdier battery compartment. The memory included is much larger too way more than I can possibly use in a full day of dictations. The controls are easy to use and there is very minimal learning curve to start recording. Overall it is fairly reasonably priced recorder for dictations. It has features such as insert which allows you to insert into the recording without overwriting something inexpensive dig recorders do not allow you to do. It also has reverse and forward review which is needed for dictations. The sound quality is very good as well. Battery life is decent. I recommend buying a couple of sets of rechargables if you do much recording.Overall a very good recorder for a decent price. I don't think that you will find a digital recorder that is useful for dictations at a better price and believe me I tried several before I got these and they were useless. I will likely buy several more for our offices as our other 2300's wear out.
A Big Mistake I purchased this voice recorder and the associated transcription module because I was unable to find a tape system for my cardiology practice that had acceptable fidelity for playback. Initially the recorder worked well. The transcriptionist in my office was very pleased and could understand every word.
Not impressed In this day and age I sure as hell expected a lot more from Olympus especially when you consider the price. The size is decedent. Frankly if it were any smaller while being more portable it would be more cumbersome to dictate with while you're actually working with it.I use this dictaphone provided by my firm and we are fully set up for the DS2 format. In that regard I can't complain because its not my problem. If you are a smaller operation please see the other reviews that complain about that file format complaint. I DO have one complaint however the pause time gaps. !!!The one ESSENTIAL function of a good voice recorder is the ability to maneuver back and forth in the last 15 seconds and to be able to restart right after you dictate a comma but want to change what you said after. In this device when you hit the pause button after finding your perfect spot you actually start back up maybe 1/4 to 1/2 second later. So if you hear comma then hit pause before you hear any sign of the next word and continue dictating. the playback will still have a chop of the old word in there. The fix is that you have to start hitting the pause just before you hear the end of your last word but hoping that you didnt cut that one off too.Yeah I may be finicky but I am a detailed and fasttalking dictator. When you produce a professional dictation device at this cost you better get the small essentials right. My old tapebased olympus was far superior in this annoying aspect pretty sad considering it was able to start/stop a physical tape better than a digital data stream.
Fits my needs nicely I have used a microcassette recorder as well as an older version Olympus digital recorder for my dictation and transcription needs for our periodontal practice over the last 8 years or so. We were forced to move forward with technology for various reasons transcription machine malfunctioning poor sound quality new microcassette machines no longer being made. The DS2400 for me was intuitive allows for multiple folders so as to allow saving of different types of cases and downloading to separate folders in our computer has superb sound quality and was affordable. I am very pleased with this purchase. One comment too. Our office computer system is networked. One of the reviews on this recorder indicated it did not work properly with networked computers. We have had NO problems at all in this regard. This is a great product.
Dictaphones Quality item easy to use and very durable. It is very difficult to erase by accident and the sound quality is excellent. We use 18 of these in our pratice and all of the doctors like them.
One annoying problem This Olympus voice recorder does not have audible tones to cue you when you have pressed pause or record. I often have to redictate information because the recorder was on pause. I did rely on the audible beeps to help me on my old recorder so I got used to that. This one states that is has an audible tone but it does not. I even called Olympus to see if maybe mine was defective but they said that this model does not offer that feature.
Design flaw erase button This is a very dependable machine except for the one thing. I believe that putting an erase button on the very front of the machine right below other buttons with no safty lock is a serious error. I work for a medical university and I cannot tell you how many doctors have mistakenly erased transcription. The way the recorder is designed to be held puts your thumb right over the erase button. Erasing in my humble opinion should require a slide lock or some other type or at the very lease a prompt asking you to push the button again if you really want to erase. The only other issue we have had with these machines is in using memory cards. The machine always seemed to lose data with them even our IT guys couldn't figure out why.
Great Product Looks and feels like the old school tape recorder operates with easy with the very nice display.major negative it will ONLY record in the ds2 format so be prepared to change the rest of your equipment with this unit.
